Inspiration

Most broken promises are not lies. "I'll send you the photos by Friday" gets said, everyone nods, and then the week happens. Bee already hears the moment the promise is made. Oathly, our app for keeping pacts with friends, already knows how to hold two people to something. Promise Catcher joins the two.

What it does

  • Bee listens through the day and pulls out the things you said you would do.
  • Promise Catcher reads them on your own computer and shows each one as a card: what you promised, who you promised it to, and by when, worked out from your own words ("by Friday", "tomorrow morning", "the 20th"). The card shows the line from the conversation it came from, so you know it is real.
  • You press Keep or Skip. Keep makes a one shot pact in your own Oathly account and gives you the invite link to send to that person.
  • When the pact is checked in on Oathly, the card says Done. Late and due soon promises stand out.

How we built it

  • A small Node server on 127.0.0.1 with a plain web page. It refuses requests from other pages.
  • Bee through the official Bee command line tool with developer mode: bee todos list, bee now (the conversations of the last 10 hours, with who said what) and bee facts list, all as JSON. Nothing from Bee is stored; the app keeps only the ids of todos it has shown and the promises you kept.
  • Oathly through its normal email code sign in, with your own session, so its row level security applies.
  • Dates come from a small set of rules, not a model: no AI call, nothing extra leaves the machine.
  • Tested with a recorded Bee day in Bee's exact JSON shapes: 44 unit tests and 12 headless play-throughs, including the bad paths: Bee unavailable, a wrong sign in code, a keep that fails.

What's next

Reminders on the watch before a deadline, and a weekly look at the promises kept and broken with each friend.
