Project Story
Inspiration
We came up with the idea for Kaleido because we're really into art and tech stuff. We noticed that there wasn't really anything out there that helped artists and designers mess around with colors in cool ways. We wanted to make something that could help them check out old color schemes, learn about what different colors mean, and try out new combos in their art. We figured adding some AI smarts could make it even cooler and maybe give people some new ideas.
What it does
So, Kaleido is this tool powered by AI that changes how artists and designers mess with colors. You can look at old color schemes and find out why certain colors mean different stuff. And the coolest part? You can swap out colors in your art to see how it changes the vibe. It's like having a whole bunch of paint swatches, but way fancier and smarter.
How we built it
We put Kaleido together by mixing a bunch of fancy tech stuff. We used Google's super smart Generative AI (they call it Gemini). With Gemini, Kaleido can check out tons of old color schemes and figure out what makes them tick. On the outside, we made a slick app using React, which is great for making stuff look good and work smooth. And to make Kaleido even smarter, we teamed up with Google AI and used their Gemini API. This made Kaleido even better at helping folks find cool colors and ideas for their art.
Challenges we ran into
Getting Gemini to work with our app was tough. It's super smart, but it wasn't easy making it talk to our app in the right way. We wanted it to be able to understand both text and pictures, but that was a real catch. Plus, the API couldn't do everything we wanted, like generating images, not just take image prompts, so we had to settle for text responses only. And making sure our app looked good and was easy to use was another big challenge. We had to balance making it fancy with making it simple enough for anyone to use. Although we do know that the API is developing more and more, and it has already made creating creative stuff easy and awesome.
What we learned
Making Kaleido taught us that working together is super important. We were artists too and Computer science students, and that mix of skills really made Kaleido shine. We also got a crash course in colors and what they mean, which was pretty neat. Turns out, there's a whole world of stuff going on with colors that we never knew about before.
What's next for Kaleido: AI Color Exploration
In the future, we want to make Kaleido even cooler. We're going to tweak the AI to make it even better at picking out colors and giving suggestions. And we're definitely going to listen to what people think so we can keep making Kaleido easier to use and more helpful. Our big dream is for Kaleido to be the first place artists and designers go when they need a burst of inspiration or a new twist on their colors. And also let artists remix their artworks , with creative prompts from Gemini.
