π ProjectDNA
Inspiration
Students invest countless hours learning new technologies, building personal projects, participating in hackathons, and contributing to open-source software. These experiences develop valuable technical skills, yet when applying for internships or entry-level jobs, much of that effort is reduced to a resume, GPA, or a GitHub link that recruiters rarely have time to explore.
Through conversations with students and reflecting on our own experiences applying for internships, we identified a common frustration:
The evidence of what students can actually build is often hidden inside their repositories.
While GitHub contains rich proof of learning and technical growth, translating that evidence into something meaningful for recruiters remains difficult.
This inspired us to build ProjectDNA.
ProjectDNA bridges the gap between learning and earning by transforming public GitHub repositories into structured, explainable, and recruiter-friendly evidence of demonstrated ability.
Instead of asking:
"What skills do you claim to have?"
ProjectDNA asks:
"What have you already proven through your work?"
Our goal is not to replace recruiters or resumes, but to help students understand their strengths, identify missing evidence, and receive actionable guidance that accelerates their journey toward interview readiness.
π‘ What It Does
ProjectDNA analyzes a public GitHub repository and converts raw technical work into meaningful, evidence-based career insights.
Using repository metadata, project structure, source code, documentation, dependencies, testing configurations, and development patterns, the platform builds an evidence profile of the user's demonstrated work.
ProjectDNA then:
- π Identifies technical skills supported by repository evidence
- π― Evaluates repository alignment with a selected target role
- π Highlights missing capability signals commonly expected by employers
- β‘ Visualizes the Opportunity Gap between current evidence and role expectations
- π οΈ Recommends a personalized portfolio project to strengthen missing areas
- π Generates a recruiter-friendly evidence packet summarizing strengths, gaps, and next steps
Rather than functioning as another resume builder, ProjectDNA acts as a career acceleration platform, helping students understand:
- Where they are today
- What they have already demonstrated
- What they should build next to improve their employability
βοΈ How We Built It
ProjectDNA was designed as an end-to-end evidence processing pipeline rather than a simple AI wrapper.
The workflow begins by ingesting a public GitHub repository through the GitHub API.
Repository metadata including:
- Languages
- Dependencies
- Documentation
- Source files
- Project structure
- Testing configurations
- CI/CD workflows
are collected and analyzed.
The repository then passes through six processing stages:
1. Evidence Extraction
Repository features are analyzed to identify demonstrated technologies, engineering practices, and project quality indicators.
2. Skill Classification
Repository evidence is translated into structured technical capability signals.
3. Role Matching
Extracted evidence is compared against the expectations of a selected target role to determine repository alignment.
4. Opportunity Gap Analysis
Missing capability signals are identified, highlighting areas where additional evidence would strengthen the portfolio.
5. Build Mission Generation
A personalized portfolio project recommendation is generated to close multiple evidence gaps simultaneously.
6. Recruiter Packet Generation
The final output is presented as a concise recruiter-friendly summary supported entirely by repository evidence.
Throughout the pipeline, every recommendation is:
- Explainable
- Transparent
- Traceable back to observable repository evidence
No conclusions rely on self-declared skills.
π§ Challenges We Faced
One of our biggest challenges was designing a system that evaluates repositories fairly without relying on resumes, credentials, or subjective self-assessments.
GitHub repositories vary significantly in:
- Quality
- Documentation
- Architecture
- Complexity
- Repository structure
Creating meaningful recommendations while remaining transparent required careful consideration of which repository signals truly represent demonstrated ability.
Another challenge was avoiding the common pitfall of becoming a simple AI wrapper.
Rather than relying on conversational responses alone, we built a structured workflow combining:
- Repository analysis
- Evidence extraction
- Role matching
- Opportunity Gap identification
- Personalized project recommendations
- Recruiter packet generation
into one cohesive product experience.
We also realized that technical analysis alone was not enough.
Students ultimately want one practical answer:
"What should I build next to improve my chances of getting hired?"
This insight shaped ProjectDNA into a guided journey from demonstrated evidence to interview readiness instead of simply displaying technical metrics.
π What We Learned
Building ProjectDNA taught us that the real challenge is not a lack of talent.
Many students already possess valuable technical skills, but the evidence is difficult for employers to discover, interpret, and evaluate efficiently.
We also learned that impactful AI products should do more than automate tasksβthey should help users make better decisions.
By transforming repository evidence into actionable guidance, ProjectDNA helps students understand:
- What they have already demonstrated
- What employers are looking for
- What they should build next
- How to become interview-ready faster
Most importantly, we learned that meaningful innovation often comes from improving how existing evidence is interpreted rather than generating entirely new information.
π Future Vision
We envision ProjectDNA evolving into a comprehensive career intelligence platform that supports learners throughout their professional journey.
Potential future enhancements include:
- Multi-repository analysis across personal and organization repositories
- Portfolio website analysis
- Kaggle integration
- Hackathon project analysis
- Research publication analysis
- Longitudinal skill progression tracking
- AI-assisted interview preparation based on repository evidence
- Recruiter dashboards for evidence-based candidate evaluation
- University career services integration
- Personalized learning pathways linked to identified skill gaps
Ultimately, our vision is a future where opportunities are driven by demonstrated ability rather than simply declared ability, enabling students to showcase the work they have already done and confidently bridge the gap between learning and earning.
