Inspiration
While hedge funds and professional analysts frequently have access to a wide variety of calculation software, retail investors frequently do not have access to as many analytical tools and frequently manually make guesses and estimates. CryptoCalc makes this process easier for retail investors.
What it does
Crypto Calc does the following:
- Allows the retail investor to enter a Financial Goal (whether that's a debt to be paid off or downpayment on a home)
- Allows user to enter an investment budget
- Allows user to 'guess' the value of the future coin
- Based on the three input data above, the user can see a list of coins and determine which ones if the input values are correct will allow them to reach their financial goal.
How we built it
This application was built using React, Javascript, Twitter Bootstrap and Coinlayer API.
Challenges we ran into
The main challenge I ran into was that once the calculation was completed the application returned a large amount of information that would be difficult for the user to sort through.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
In order to solve this main challenge, I used styled components to ensure that when the user's financial goal was met, the coin was highlighted in the return statement as 'green'. The coins that do not meet the financial goal remain 'red' to alert the user that buying this coin will not help them meet their financial goal.
What we learned
I am definitely using CryptoCalc for myself in the future, to make quick estimates whenever I want to buy a cryptocurrency. I learned that the best thing is to make something you can use yourself - that way, even if you do not win a competition, you can use your creations in your daily life.
What's next for CryptoCalc
CryptoCalc I feel would be best integrated into an online financial news platform. I feel the next thing to do, should this actually become a real app would be to make connections with small or large news agencies or integrate it with a News API to draw in users that already read financial news and might want to make use of the calculator when they do so.
