Inspiration
At UCSC, we noticed that a majority of restrooms do not have menstrual product dispensers. This is part of a larger problem, the overall inaccessibility of menstrual products in public restrooms, specifically in schools.
What it does
Project WMYN is a prototype of a website where users can add to or search through a database of nearby restrooms that offer menstrual products. Our home page has some information and instructions for users. Our share location page is where users can input a restroom with period products near them to the database, using the text bar or google maps function (to clarify, we are using cities instead of addresses for demo purposes). Our location page has the same text and maps function, but users can instead find a restroom with period products. If a location does not have restrooms, users can petition to create one by submitting a form through the request location tab. In addition, a chat box allows them to see what others are saying.
How we built it
We built Project WMYN using HTML, CSS, Javascript, Figma, and Google API and Drive.
Challenges we ran into
The overall integration of different languages, for example, getting the HTML objects to connect to the Javascript functions.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Creating a MVP in less than 24 hours, and the purpose and intent of our project in particular.
What we learned
Effective communication and collaboration as a newly formed team, using languages we weren't super confident in.
What's next for Project WMYN
In future iterations, we want the pin drop google function to work correctly and to create a backend to save data after refreshing so that the database can be expanded, both of which were difficult with our short time frame and current skill set. Also, cleaning up the UI/UX.
