Inspiration
We were inspired by our personal journeys. We all grew up in communities where drug abuse and addiction are major problems. Being able to tackle these problems and support people through technology is something fascinating. Our inspiration stemmed from the millions of life stories of people. One being of Gina, her story is included in our profile!
What it does
Sobr Buddy is an app for the people and for the user. An app to motivate, inspire, and encourage. Our goal is to take the shame out of addiction. 21 million Americans are suffering from addiction and only 10% of people ever seek help. Our goal here at Sobr Buddy is to increase that number by removing the stigma associated with addiction. We aim to combine people struggling with addiction and mental health issues with local counselors and other recovering addicts that are further along in their recovery journey. Our online community is a very supportive group of people that can assist with providing you encouragement and helping you stay focused on your path to recovery. Counselors will be available 24 hours. This will be done by making a database and reaching out to professionals who are willing to help. We will offer emergency services that will link directly to an addiction specialist counselor, 911, or suicide prevention hotlines with the click of a button. Our state-of-the-art facial recognition algorithm will be able to determine if you are too intoxicated to operate a motor vehicle. We will offer ride-sharing services as well. Our target demographic will be people attending recovery meetings in a prison environment and people attending meetings in a rehab setting. Anyone struggling with addiction is more than welcome to use our app. We will also measure vitals like heart rate using wearable health technology. We will build a community of inclusiveness and togetherness by letting each other know we are never alone. Our app not only keeps addiction at bay but also improves mental health by allowing human connection and interaction. Your Sobr buddy is only a click away to guide you in your recovery.
How we built it
We decided the functions the apps would perform. Then we went on to deciding the workflow of the app. Finally designing the basic UI and adding speaker notes to each slide. The navigation takes place by connecting links to different slides and buttons.
Challenges we ran into
The time zone differences, we had teammates from India, Houston, and even Thailand! We also faced some issues with designing and through the process, we overcame our obstacles and learned many new lessons.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Made life-long friends, learned valuable skills, and hopefully brought awareness to the mental health problems addressing everyone.
