Inspiration

Cents & Sensibility is an AI powered personal finance platform inspired by the Library of Alexandria, reimagined as a modern, living archive of financial intelligence.

In the ancient world, the Library of Alexandria stood as humanity’s greatest collection of knowledge. It was a place where ideas, discoveries, and wisdom from across civilizations were gathered, preserved, and studied to guide the future. Cents & Sensibility brings that same philosophy into the financial world. Our platform collects financial data, historical trends like inflation, and market patterns, transforming them into a living, interactive archive of financial intelligence.

The name Cents & Sensibility is inspired by Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility. By combining fun and interactive historical aspects, Cents & Sensibility offers a user interactive learning and engaging platform for beginners who are looking into getting into investing!

What it does

Unlike traditional budgeting applications that passively track past spending, Cents & Sensibility actively guides users in managing their finances. The platform begins by taking a user’s monthly salary and helping them allocate it across different categories, offering personalized recommendations on how much to spend, save, and invest based on their financial profile. It offers portfolios of what stocks to invest that depend on PEG ratios and that align with the user’s financial capacity and goals. It helps investors determine if a stock's high P/E is justified by its expected growth rate. A low P/E might look cheap, but if growth is zero, the PEG is high. It includes an AI-chatbot named Archive that provides general budgeting, savings, and investing advice for users who are just beginning to understand financial literacy. When showing the stocks, it provides a visual of trends and downtrends, and a historical background that identifies patterns of the companies' stocks. The target market for Cents & Sensibility consists primarily of college students, young professionals, and first time investors who are seeking accessible financial tools. Many individuals in this demographic lack proper financial literacy and can often feel overwhelmed by traditional investing platforms. As a result, there is a strong demand for solutions that simplify financial decision-making while providing guidance and support. Many existing platforms either focus heavily on tracking expenses or cater to more experienced investors, leaving a gap for beginner-friendly starters. Cents & Sensibility addresses this gap by combining budgeting, investing, and education into a single platform. Its use of AI and interactive features gives it user engagement and financial literacy growth.

By combining real-time guidance, AI-driven insights, and practical spending alternatives, Cents & Sensibility empowers users to make smarter, more informed financial decisions.

How we built it

Data for stocks sourced from the finance package in Python, data for inflation sourced from the cpi package in Python.

Challenges we ran into

Creating the AI Chatbot with APIs, connecting a host for the website, coming up with the historical and cultural aspect. We had accidentally been anonymously pushing into our Github Repo, as one of the contributors had been accidentally using the wrong email from the one that was added. We did not realized this until later on into the night which messed up when we were pushing and pulling code from the repo. We also ran into the problem of using our own domain with the Github pages, having us to resort to render to run the web.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Incorporating the User experience and Visual Appeals, Stock information and graphs, AI-Chatbot. We created are own logos as well through IbisPaintX and Canva. The Visual Graphs such as the stock graphs and pie charts also more user engagement. Cents & Sensibility drives long-term engagement by turning financial growth into an evolving learning journey rather than a one-time task. Inspired by the Library of Alexandria, users continuously build their own “archive” of financial knowledge as they interact with the platform.

What we learned

Understanding the market in for investment, stocks based on salaries and allocation of budgets. We developed a marketing and business strategy to appeal to our targeted demographic. Overall, the business aspect of savings and investing smarter for our demographic. We learned to collaborate and communicate using Vscode and Github Repo.

What's next for Cents & Sensibility

The platform could expand into educational markets by offering its services to schools and universities as a financial literacy tool. This would not only drive user growth but also position the platform as a socially impactful solution. We want to make our own domain workable as well.

We want to also add a housing navigation system for those who want to allocate towards saving and budgeting towards housing. A lot of younger students/adults are looking to buy their own place but unsure how to. We want to integrate a tool that helps those who want to start somewhere.
Solana was used for monetary transactions using its own crypto using Python package. It ties to a wallet where you can transfer your money to. We want to implement it so that it connects to stocks no the personal wallet.
