Inspiration

Fast fashion is both wasteful and dehumanizing in its use of sweatshops. We wanted to combat the sales of fast fashion brands by educating consumers about which brands are sustainable or not.

What it does

Our project is a website that takes a picture of a barcode, scans it, checks the brand name against our database, and returns whether the brand there is sustainable or not. This only applies to fashion brands.

How we built it

Two of us focused on the website and barcodes, while the other two worked on scraping websites for lists of good and bad brands.

Challenges we ran into

The barcodes were not always scanning even when they should have been in our database. We also needed to teach ourselves new libraries in Python like Django and Beautiful Soup.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We taught ourselves how to use new libraries and gave ourselves practical experience with planning to make a project with Python.

What we learned

We learned how to scrape websites for information, as well as how to use HTML to build a website. We also learned Django and how barcodes work.

What's next for Project-Unravel

We would like to expand our database of brands in order to cover more brands, and give ways for the user to expand our data base by rating a given brand. We would like to refine our barcode reader, making it more reliable and allowing other forms of barcodes to be read.
