Inspiration

Being students in the International Baccalaureate program, we understand the importance of effective study, especially how the lack of it can affect students. Therefore, we decided to create The Happy Place, the only website students will need to study.

What it does

The Happy Place is a multifunctional website used for studying with minimized distractions. Several key features include: A Study Materials Page which contains a library of Canadian and IB Curriculum textbooks and other resources including reading lists to provide ease of access to additional educational opportunity. A To-Do List function to keep students organized while studying. Users can add their own tasks and mark them as completed or delete them. Tasks don't disappear until they are explicitly removed by the user in order to keep progress from previous sessions. A built-in music player with the 5 main genres of study music, including nature sounds in order to increase the focus of students during their studying session. An Ask AI page to answer simple questions while studying instead of googling which gives less specific answers and can cause side-tracking. A Mental Health page to ensure that students are in a good state of mind. Although academics can be stressful, it is important to keep a good balance. Within the page, there are breathing exercises, motivational quotes, and a text box to send messages directly to us. A contacts page to get directly in touch with us.

How we built it

We built the entire website using HTML, CSS and Javascript. We also use the openAI API to create the chat bot.

Challenges we ran into

Given that this is our first Hackathon, the biggest challenge was figuring out how the competition works. Unfortunately, due to our complete lack of experience everyone we reached out to team up with kindly declined our offer. In terms of code, our biggest challenge was implementing the API into our system, however, the API workshop helped a lot with that component.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

This entire experience is a huge accomplishment and we are very proud of as we have never competed in a hackathon before or even worked on a project under time restrictions.

What we learned

Throughout this process we have learned loads in the coding and workshops. Our favourite part was learning how to implement APIs.

What's next for The Happy Place

In the future we plan to expand the library of study materials to include curricula from all over the work. Additionally, we can improve the music player function by making it more customizable for the user and possibly integrate Spotify APIs.
