Inspiration

Every year, I spend my summer in a small province called Vinh Long, Vietnam. Here, I get to see the hard work of my 49-year-old grandma as she goes out to the field at 7 and won’t come back until noon. Like every other rice farmer, my grandma lives in constant worry as she has to look after the crops and the cattle on a low budget earn from the previous harvest season. Though my grandma is now 61 years old and no longer has to work in the field, I feel empathized with the Vietnamese farmers and am motivated to create a humanitarian platform funding their families.

What it does

Happy farm is an online website for rice producers to share their stories and receive donations from rice consumers across the country. The farmers use their username and password to log in to the homepage which contains a digital wallet balance, which they can withdraw and deposit, and a hyperlink leading to blogger.com where they get to write the blog. After finishing their posts, farmers publish their stories, use the “Create QR code for this page” provided by Google Chrome, and have it printed on every bag of rice. When QR code is scanned from the consumer’s smartphone device, he or she gets access to the farmer’s post and makes a donation using Venmo.

How we built it

I use languages in html, js, css, and a domain I already had to build this project.

Challenges we ran into

I am not acquainted with web development and are not familiar with javascript, so that was super frustrating.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I was able to cover a seven-hour-long video on YouTube teaching how to get started with Javascript, and a three-hour-long video teaching front end development using Angular

What we learned

I learned Javascript, how to install npm, angular, node js, and how to update outdated versions of node on my computer.

What's next for .

In the future, I hope to display the actual balance from the farmers’ digital wallets and enable them to transfer money from their digital wallets to their bank accounts.

I also look forward to enabling smallholder rice producers to export rice to North American countries by helping farmers enroll in Food Trust program. Basically, Food Trust, which ran by IBM Watson, is a blockchain that allows consumers to trace the quality, originality of their food. This would make the Vietnamese brand become more well known by international consumers and secure a higher price for smallholder rice producers.
