Inspiration
Inspired by our friend Ryan, seizures reduce the freedom of those that suffer and we wanted to create a way for those people to feel more comfortable and safe.
What it does
Our hack uses an intel accelerometer to track quick certain continuous movements, indicating a seizure. When a seizure is detected, the user is prompted to confirm if they are OK or are in need of medical assistance. If the person does not confirm that they are OK, then EMS and their emergency contacts will be alerted via SMS. We have also enabled the platform to control other IoT devices in such an emergency. This can help EMS with unlocking the front door of the house, and turning on a light at the front of the house.
How we built it
We built our hack with an Intel Edison. We also have an accelerometer, button, and grove lcd display. To send the message, we used Amazon Web Services.
Challenges we ran into
We had trouble connecting the Intel Edison to the AWS, also building the hardware, forcing us to continuously switch between the Edison, Arduino Uno and Arduino 101 to get the components operational. We want to compress the system into a smart watch, as that is the motion we designed it for and because smart watches already have accelerometers and displays and buttons, however, we didn't know how to code for that.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud that we got the hardware to work and connect to the internet. We're also happy that we got the AWS to register and work.
What we learned
We learned literally everything about hardware over these past 36 hours and we still have more to learn!! We went from 0 experience with hardware to building a seizure-detecting device... main challenges being software (darn you software...)
What's next for Project Soylent Hack
We would love to save people from seizures and get our hardware to send the alerts automatically. Also have this working through a beautiful interface on Pebble, AppleWatch or other wearable tech.
