Inspiration

Project seagull was inspired by our own experiences at school - schools that never taught us critical life skills to succeed in today's evolving workplace - skills such as communication, confidence, self awareness, productivity and creativity. We felt that if we had learned these skills from an early age, we would have been a lot more successful in our personal and professional lives.

Additionally, some of us in the team are parents and saw first hand the large disconnect between skills required at work and skills schools actually teach their children.

What it does

We have built a program that teaches children life skills based on their passion projects, i.e. the program is a digital, personalized learning curriculum that enables kids to learn faster, be more productive, confident and creative - all while having fun and building a sense of community and belongingness.

The child signs up to the program and is assigned a tailored curriculum based on his/her interests. Each passion project has a set number of hours it takes to complete and a number of tasks that the child has to undertake.

Once the child makes progress towards his/her passion project, he/she has the option to challenge fellow community members on the projects, level up her personal profile and invite others to collaborate on similar projects.

The child has the option of proceeding with the basic version of the program, and a premium version with a mentor that guides the child through his/her own personalized learning journey.

The program is designed based on on five key elements: Personalization, Community, Engagement, Persona and Gamification.

How we built it

We built the program on Figma and the website on indesign.

Challenges we ran into

Our key challenge was in deciding whether or not we had to include a human mentor as a part of the basic version of the program. The mentor would be like a guide, holding children more accountable and keep them on track toward achieving their learning goals and passion projects, proving practical tips on time management and scheduling at the same time.

However, we decided to scrap this idea at the end because of the extra costs and effort involved in training and hiring in house mentors. Additionally, we felt that many parents would not be motivated to pay an extra amount for mentorship. Thus, we decided to include it in the premium version of the program.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're proud of our prototype design and final product, and the way each team member contributed their specific skills to bring the final product together.

What we learned

We learned interface design, how to craft an elevator pitch, how to develop product market fit, how to ideate in collaboration and how to conduct an analysis on industry feasibility/attractiveness.

What's next for Project Seagull

We intend to take this project forward and incorporate our learnings into developing an actual, live prototype. We have already conducted a market analysis and have a business model and pitch deck in place. The next step will be to further develop and improve the MVP, hire interns and finally turn it into a live, early stage start-up.
