Inspiration

We were inspired to take on this project, as we realised that with the age of information and technology, although people are able to come together to share their opinions online, there is a lot of noise and clutter, and in some cases, cencorship. Thus, we devised a website where people are able to freely express their opinions, and have receive inspiration for topics simply by searching for countries or major cities, to find trending topics in the area.

What it does

The project is a website that allows users to create articles to share insights and knowledge, as well as chat to other users, and search for currently trending topics on the internet based on geo location. By making the website clutter free and solely focused on these key features, it encourages users to have meaningful conversations and discussions.

How we built it

We built it utilising retool as a device for front-end development, and python to build the back-end infrastructure, utilising a variety of packages including flask to host a server, tweepy to interact with Twitter API, requests to handle user input, and geopy to gather location data.

Challenges we ran into

The primary challenge we ran into was our team having little experience with front end development as our experience with coding is primarily in back end design. However, this was sorted when we found the web application retool, which allowed us to design the website with little experience in javascript.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

As we are all fairly new to hackathons and have basic programming experience, we considered this project a challenge, and being able to deliver the product we have created in the short time frame available to us is an accomplishment that we are proud of the most. However, some other notable accomplishments within the project include;

  • Creating a functional chat box that allows multiple users to interact with each other
  • Creating a functional trend search engine with an interactive map that marks the country or major city that is searched.

What we learned

This hackathon has taught us a myriad of things. The biggest takeaway from this would definitely be the front end development experience that we have picked up along the way, although it may not be an eye catching project, creating the different functional features of the website and working on it as a group has taught us the intricacies of full stack development, and its quirks. This has also helped boost our teamwork skills and

What's next for Project Realest

We look forward to expanding our skillset in full stack development, as we found this experience really fun and challenging. Perhaps even dabble in app development :).
