Inspiration
The daily reality for millions of university students is the "free-rider" problem and last-minute scrambling due to fragmented communication and a lack of accountability in group projects. Tasks are lost in chaotic chat apps, and file versions are confusing. We were inspired to create a minimalist, high-value tool that directly addresses this Accountability Gap to restore fairness and clarity to academic collaboration.
What it does
Project Pulse is a single-project dashboard designed exclusively for university students to manage group work accountability in minutes. It focuses on immediate clarity and contribution visibility, featuring:
Accountability Clock: A simple check-in/check-out feature that logs time and proof of contribution, directly combating the free-rider issue.
Micro-Task Boards: A Kanban board tailored for ultra-small tasks to ensure rapid progress visibility.
Shared Asset Bucket: A single, centralized location for all current drafts and necessary research files, eliminating "where is the file?" chaos.
Meeting Summary Generator: A template that standardizes note-taking and links decisions directly to new tasks.
How we built it
We designed the front-end using Next.js and Tailwind CSS to achieve a fast, clean, and highly minimalist user interface. The back-end is structured around a FastAPI/Node.js architecture to handle project data and authentication logic efficiently. We utilized MongoDB/PostgreSQL for storing project state, Accountability Clock logs, and task information, while AWS S3 was chosen for reliable file linking within the Shared Asset Bucket.
Challenges we ran into
The main challenge was maintaining the strict minimalist scope. It was tempting to add complex professional project management features, but we constantly resisted this to ensure the tool remains incredibly simple and fast for stressed students. Additionally, ensuring the Accountability Clock feature was robust yet non-confrontational required careful UI/UX design.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of successfully distilling the complex problem of project management chaos into a simple, three-feature solution. Specifically, the concept of the Accountability Clock is our biggest accomplishment, as it directly addresses the universally hated "free-rider" problem with a verifiable, non-confrontational metric of commitment.
What we learned
We learned that in high-friction environments (like academic deadlines), a highly minimalist design that focuses on one single, core outcome (accountability) is often exponentially more valuable than a feature-rich platform. Simplicity and speed are the true drivers of student adoption.
What's next for Project Pulse
Next steps include developing a dedicated "Instructor View" to provide read-only project analytics for grading, implementing an export function for official Contribution Reports, and potentially integrating an LLM to automatically generate Micro-Tasks from unstructured meeting notes. We also aim to offer direct integration with major LMS platforms like Canvas and Blackboard.
