Inspiration
In the summer of 2019, the Oro Youth Development Office launched a primary leadership program that aimed to develop and empower the youth. They opened the application process online in search of young progressives who were willing to take the challenge of being formed into competent and compassionate leaders.
It is a batch project of the alumni. They have developed the character of an equipped, engaged, and empowered individual who has shown their concern to the community through taking the initiative of making a project which addresses the concerns of people during COVID - 19.
As we are now online, we are spending more time on social media and other networking sites. Thus, we came upon having a webinar series and an online campaign. We all know that traveling from then and now requires social distancing and proper hygiene, thus we came to put dividers on motorela as it is the number one source of travel in Cagayan de Oro City. For the handwashing, as new normal currently approaches it is a must now to properly wash your hands and bring alcohol/hand sanitizer were ever you go. We came up to name the Project as Project Protect Everyone(PPE), from online, handwashing and traveling we are protecting not just ourselves but everyone.
One of our inspiration is the HACKBANG Organizers for giving us the opportunity to voice out our concerns and solutions to help solve the problem that we see in our status quo. Ma'am Redge Rafols, for giving us insights on our project that this will come into reality. Lastly is our family and our community, that as we go out through our homes we will not be scared for we know we are protected. For His Greater Glory, Project Protect Everyone!
What it does
Project Protect Everyone is composed of the following 5 sub-projects that primarily help Kagay-anons in coping up with the new normal.
PPE: Face Mask, refer to online campaigns, ensures reliable and safe information provided to the public. In the same way that a face mask protects our mouth, campaigns can also be helpful in protecting everyone against the spread of fake news.
PPE: Face Shield, a sub-project referring to webinar series, provides relevant information and gives us additional knowledge in what ways can we cope with the new normal and other things in facing this pandemic. It is named face shield because this PPE protects the head part and the webinar series deals with knowledge.
PPE: Protective Glasses, referring to fundraising, helps donate and raise funds in this project and see how big of a help you have made to our community through your donations. This PPE connects to this sub-project in the aspect of seeing our initiative clearly as a way for you to also help through donating.
PPE: Boots, in the same way as the boots, protect our feet wherever we go, this PPE represents our initiative to provide Motorela Dividers to help ensure the city safer travel with our public transportation.
PPE: Gloves, in the same way, the gloves protect our hands, PPE: Gloves, which refer to hand washing station, ensures that students in public schools see the importance and gain the habit of proper handwashing. Protect your hands and you might protect others too.
How we built it
We will raise funding and partner with different LGU's in Cagayan de Oro City.
PPE: Face Mask: Through our Online Facebook Page: www.facebook.com/OYLAAlumni, we will update the Kagay-Anon youths on how they will cope up with the new normal. Especially the COVID19 related news we will make sure that we are one of the platforms that will not spread fake news that will cause the public commotion/confusion within the community.
PPE: Face Shield: Through online platforms using also our Facebook Page, Zoom Meeting we will invite known/famous speakers, influencers, advocates, psychologists, advisers, and other experts on the field of our chosen topics on our webinar.
PPE: Protective Glasses: We will ask for help whether in kind or in cash to organizations, local government units, and through our online friends to help us with our fundraising project for a good cause.
PPE: Boots: With the help of Oro Youth Cagayan de Oro City for providing with us the tarpaulins(We will recycle tarpaulin), it will be given to a tailoring shop to tailor the divider that will be given to moterela drivers.
PPE: Gloves: With the help of the 4th Infantry Division, they will be the ones who will assemble and place the improvised handwashing facility to the selected beneficiaries.
Challenges we ran into
The challenge that we ran into in making this project is really knowing the core problem now. As we all know COVID19 will never vanish right away, thinking of a solution that will last for a long time is the very first challenge that we ran into. Next is our online campaign-how do we let people know our ideas and sentiments, who will do the graphic design and such, how to reach out people since we are all in quarantine, and going outside is prohibited unless for important reasons(Grocery, Medicine, etc). After our session with the team, we officially launch our online platform through Facebook as our means of transporting our message. Next is our Webinar Series, we are la Lastly, is on how to raise our funds.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Our organization has had a long journey of failures and achievements but this hackathon is a big event for us. Signing up as a team in Hack-Bang is already an accomplishment. Proposing a project is neither easy so we also call it an achievement of our organization. We are able to draft this project and present it to people who can also share the same concern for the current situation of Mindanao this pandemic. Thus, we aim to really make this project a reality.
What we learned
Our organization went through a series of sessions to hone ourselves into becoming leaders who are equipped, engaged, and empowered. We have learned a lot, from crafting a project proposal to pitching it to possible stakeholders. Making a project is a long process and consistent communication with the team is a must. Project Protect Everyone is a project that is rooted in the problems observed in the city of Cagayan de Oro. We have stumbled upon the idea of how risky it is for students to come back to school and for Kagay-anons to go back to what used to be normal. So, we plan to address these issues through our PPE.
What's next for Project Protect Everyone (PPE)
We seek for funding and possible donors to make our project into reality. Professionals and mentors who could also help our team would be greatly appreciated as we strive for everyone's safety in these times of pandemic.
