Inspiration

Our team is composed of members who are all student drivers, and we were all frustrated at how poor road conditions worsen our driving experience. As we did further research, we realized nobody took action to report these discrepancies to our local government. So, we decided to tackle this problem by automatically creating reports of potholes as you drive.

What it does

The app uses modern phone's built in accelerometer to determine if the user experiences a sudden jolt of vertical movement while driving. We can isolate these instances to locations of potholes and distinguish them from speed bumps, because speed bumps go up and down, but potholes go down and up. It then makes reports that appear on a virtual map that highlight areas which are experiencing a high frequency of pothole incidents at a certain location. The app can load this virtual map so users are more aware of the poor road conditions in their area, and the government can take action through our crowdsourced data.
