Inspiration
Our country has a growing health crisis and no it's not the one that most of you are thinking of. As we were all gathered together in the evening playing games together for what seemed to be hours, and our postures slid to increasingly worse positions, and one of our friend's Apple Watches reminded them to breathe, we all soon realized that our deep engagement in the game has totally knocked us out of caring for ourselves. This is not only a problem but there are many Americans that are facing failing health because of the fact that we lack the motivation and resources in caring for our own health. With the US continuing to face obesity and mental health crisis we know we needed to create something is allowing Americans to start looking after themselves
What it does
Our application is a simple health tracking application that also is a one-stop-shop for cheering up to. It's like having your own medical companion right in your pocket. Now obviously it's not as capable as a professionally trained physician or psychologist but that's not the point.. Our goal for the app is to get you aware of our health as many Americans simply seem to forget about it. Physically and mentally. We hope that the simple daily trackers in the app and the encouraging randomized quotes built into the applications can inspire you to drink more water, think about exercise and as my old math teacher would say actually got out as I am aware that millions of us are simply guilty of being glided to our seats and tech. By using the apps it should be a jumping stone into worrying about our personal health.
How we built it
Andriod Studio and Kotlin PS and Illustrator for Icons IMovie for the Video
Challenges we ran into
As our group's first mobile app development project we were all very new to both UI design and under-the-hood coding. Noone of us had any experience in JAVA or Kotlin. At most we have some basic experience using Python or JS. Every new addition would lead us to the dreaded java exception fatal failure message but despite those hardships, we keep pushing through to make the best use of our time.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I am very proud of all my teammates and I for the fact of even completing this hackathon. As our group's first hackathon we never thought a whole piece of software could even be made. The fact that we were able to do that to me is already incredible . I am very grateful that our team worked so well together and everyone was able to both learn and have fun with this experience . Personally speaking I am not particularly skilled in working under such a short amount of time so coding an application in a new language in 48 hours is already a big win for us.
What we learned
As our first hackathon, we obviously learned a lot. We learned how to quickly brainstorm, come up with ideas, learn to compromise, and collaborate in software development. Obviously, it was nice learning a new segment and programming style/language but the fundamentals of being a software engineer like working in a team and creative problem solvings are the most important takeaways from the whole experience
What's next for Project Pengu Monitor
Due to the limited amount of time that was allocated to us for creating this project, there were a lot of compromises . I really wanted to experience more withGoogles AI CLoud however the constraint to 48 hours limited that option. Additionally, some app features were scrapped due to that time. As a result, we hope to expand our research and continue to add back these missing features, and learn more about the tools we used to build this program in our goal to improve the experience of Project Pengu Monitor for the consumer.
