Inspiration

CollegeFreeway was developed to address the common challenges high school students face when applying to college. Many students need more resources, guidance, and motivation during this critical phase. Our goal was to create a centralized platform that would streamline the application process and make college more accessible for all students, regardless of their background.

What it does

CollegeFreeway is a free platform that uses machine learning to provide students with personalized resources for the college application process. It offers academic roadmaps tailored to each student’s profile, including relevant scholarships, application tips, and essay guides. By consolidating these resources, CollegeFreeway supports students throughout each step of the application journey.

How we built it

The platform was developed using a combination of machine learning algorithms and web scraping tools. The machine learning model personalizes resources for each student by analyzing their academic background, goals, and university preferences. Python was used for backend development, with web scrapers collecting real-time information on scholarships and application requirements. The front end, built in React, prioritizes a straightforward and responsive user experience.

Challenges we ran into

Developing an effective recommendation system that could adapt to a variety of student needs was a primary challenge. Additionally, maintaining data privacy and complying with regulatory standards for handling academic information required careful planning. Optimizing the web scraping tools to deliver real-time updates without affecting the platform’s performance was also essential.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We’re pleased with creating a centralized platform that simplifies the college application process for students. The machine learning-based academic roadmap generator was a key achievement, offering students tailored guidance. Establishing partnerships with educational organizations to extend CollegeFreeway’s reach was also an important milestone in broadening access to college resources.

What we learned

The development process highlighted the complexities of the college application process and the role that technology can play in supporting educational access. We gained valuable insights into handling educational data responsibly and the importance of user-friendly design in maintaining student engagement.

What's next for CollegeFreeway

Looking ahead, we plan to expand CollegeFreeway’s reach by partnering with schools and universities for beta testing, allowing us to gather feedback for continuous improvement. Additional plans include adapting the platform for international students and incorporating interactive content to further support students through the application process.
