Inspiration

In our modern age of food abundance, I noticed that we often waste food out of habit. I wanted to use AI's unique perspective to challenge this. My inspiration was to reveal the truth of the ancient proverb, "every grain is hard-earned," and evoke a new respect for this common, precious resource.

What it does

"A Grain of Rice" uses AI animation as a "conceptual microscope." It takes the audience into an unexpected miniature landscape that unfolds on or within a single grain of rice. The film's narrative deconstructs and reassembles the imagery of rice, revealing the journey behind the grain—from planting and harvesting to its final form. It's a visual reminder that every grain is a world, and every labor deserves to be seen.

How we built it

I used a complete generative workflow to create this micro-world:

  1. Shot Conception (with Gemini): I described my vision of a "rice world" to Gemini to generate the key start/end frames and motion prompts.
  2. Keyframe Generation (with Google Imagen / "NanoBanana"): I used Google's Imagen model to create the detailed, microscopic static images.
  3. Video Generation (with Google Veo 3.1): I used VEO to animate these frames, creating the sense of "traveling" into the grain of rice.
  4. Music Generation (with ElevenLabs): I used ElevenLabs to generate a calm, wondrous, and respectful musical score that fit the film's meditative mood.
  5. Final Assembly (with CapCut): Finally, I used CapCut (剪映) to edit the clips and music together.

Challenges we ran into

AI generation for 'microscopic' worlds still has limitations. The main challenge was getting the AI to produce a clear, detailed micro-world instead of an abstract blur. To get the flow right, I had to strategically adjust the 'camera' and motion prompts to get as close as possible to the image in my brain.

Accomplishments that we are proud of

I am proud that this short film is a "declaration" of a simple truth. I have a deep-seated moving feeling that the feeling in my heart—respect for this resource—could finally be presented visually to the world, even if only one person sees it.

What we learned

We learned that AI is not a replacement for human thinking, but a partner that inspires it. We must use our own thinking to drive the AI to present what we want. This makes the creative process (and absorbing knowledge) more exciting, because what you can imagine is now on the path to becoming possible.

What's next for "A Grain of Rice"

My work will continue to focus on the current state of the world, but I want to use this "knowledge-sharing" format to add more. I hope to create more films that help eliminate anxiety, spread happiness, and convey the importance of thinking.
