Inspiration:

As a team, we love focusing on real-world social problems and brainstorm ways in which we could help solving it through our common interests of emerging technologies. Josh came up with an idea a few weeks ago that we could develop an AR closet where people can access easily even by the disabled, and allow all humans to share their clothes with each other like a universal closet.

What It Does:

  • Scans and uploads users’ clothes into a digital cloud.
  • Creates a size-to-size 3D avatar by scanning the user’s body, providing a personalized fit experience.
  • Allows users to browse their wardrobe in an AR closet.
  • Enables users to drag and drop clothes onto their digital avatar to visualize fit and style accurately.
  • Provides detailed information on each garment, including composition, washing frequency, wear frequency, and storage tips.
  • Includes a community-based garment exchange for an online thrift store.
  • Tracks carbon footprint savings and awards badges for sustainable actions.

Our goal is to create a digital wardrobe solution that emphasizes sustainability and inclusivity.

How we built it:

First we designed the User journey for the disabled and the necessary UIs needed for both the disabled and able-bodied to share their AR closets through figma. Then we designed and fabricated the 3D assets including the clothing, fabric properties and the size-to-size 3D avatars of ourselves Marvelous Designer & Photoshop. Finally in Unity, we built the AR environment where we imported all the UIs and the 3D assets and developed the hand-track movements and interactions necessary.

Challenges we ran into:

We initially had the idea of 3D scanning our own bodies to be used as avatars in our interface but the phone apps did not offer good scanning qualities for our bodies. Meantime, we need to figure out the workflow to import and export realistic garment from Marvelous Designer into Unity. In addition, we had to solve continuous issues with the hand-tracked interactions in unity & the Oculus 3.

Accomplishments that we're proud of:

We successfully developed an intuitive AR-based closet and integrated sustainable and accessible features, providing a tool that not only manages clothing but also promotes eco-friendly practices.

What we learned:

This project taught us valuable insights about AR development, the importance of user-centered design in accessibility, and the technical challenges of integrating various systems seamlessly.

What's next for AuGarmented Guru:

We plan to expand the accessibility features, collaborate with sustainable brands, and develop further gamification elements to increase user engagement. We aim to implement LLMs to give recommendations, tips, and advice on outfit styles. Further development with the UI and easier & effective methods of body 3D scanning will also be explored.
