Our mission is to provide housing, opportunities, protection, and equality for all. We were inspired by the ability of volunteers to come together and support the needs of the community.
What it does
Project HOPE aims to provide relief to those in need of housing, food, and clothing in Washington DC. By providing resources to organizations through links and embedded maps, Project HOPE is providing a straightforward tool that can be easily navigated by many. Furthermore, Project HOPE gives resources to potential volunteers seeking volunteering opportunities in the DC Area.
How we built it
We used the Google Maps API from google cloud to provide maps of different organizations and resources in the DC area. We also used WordPress to develop the front end UI for our website. We used HTML/CSS/JS to implement the Google Maps API. Using this API we manually placed markers on the map for specific locations in the DC Area.
Challenges we ran into
When manually placing the markers on the map, we found that this process was not time efficient, and in the future, we want to broaden the scope of our Project HOPE’s reach.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We were successfully able to create a website that is easy to navigate and accessible to people in DC. We were able to make three separate maps interactive by using a Google Maps API.
What we learned
We learned how to manipulate Google Maps API to add markers on locations in HTML. We also learned how to embed a Google Maps API into a website.
What's next for Project HOPE
We plan to broaden the scope of Project HOPE to all metropolitan areas in the US. We plan to automate the process of placing markers on the map by using a CSV file to store the coordinate points of all the locations of such organizations in different areas and use this file to map the markers.
