Inspiration
Reintroducing SSTs at this scale would have substantial noise impacts. Substantial parts of the world would experience disruptive sonic booms from the new SST aircraft. Canada, Germany, Iraq, Ireland, Israel, Romania, Turkey, and parts of the United States would experience frequent sonic booms; the most heavily impacted regions could be exposed to between 150 and 200 incidents per day. This a problem that requires a solution.
What it does and how we built it
A few infrastructures are built around city area to emit anti-waves that cancel out the noise pollution (sonic booms) generated by SST. The anti-waves with multiple sources are activated within short period determined by predicting the exact time period that the super-sonic aircrafts will pass through the city to save power and sustainable during inactivate hours.
Challenges we ran into
We noticed that the anti-wave emitted by our gadget would also be harmful to people - to a lower extent. This was improved by attaching a heat strap around the source to allow sounds propagate at a higher level. Sustainability and cost of implementation are also two crucial issues yet to be solved.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We managed to solve most of the problems we ran into within one night only. Horray.
What we learned
We obtained a deeper understanding in application of mathematics in natural science.
What's next for Project Harpocrates
More research and case studies are required to determine a more accurate estimation of cost and the feasibility of this project.
