As beginners here in our first hackathon, we were drawn to the simplicity of classic arcade games like Atari Breakout and Tetris. We decided to recreate Alien Invasion, but with our own uniques twist.
What it does
Our game starts off as a text-based fantasy game, where the player must fight the dragon, rescue the victim and save the day. No matter what, the player gets a happy ending until they decide to venture further. When the player is finally able to make a choice that matters, they must face the consequences and escape evil aliens attacking them, back to the beginning of the game, and escape the story.
How we built it
Using python and pygame, we split up into pairs to work on the story part of the game and the alien invasion part. By looking through tutorials, we imported assets and coded our game bit by bit.
Challenges we ran into
As first-time hackers, we were ambitious, and while we had amazing ideas, executing them was a whole other issue. Unfortunately, while we weren't able to put together a finished game, we learned to downsize and focus on the more important aspects of our project.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
By working together, we learned more about pygame, making games and solving coding issues along the way. With little to no coding experience, we managed to produce some work to show our improvement with python!
What we learned
We learned more about rules and functions in python, how to use pyGame, how to effectively communicate and divide work with our team members, and most importantly, that it is okay when mistakes happen and things don't go as planned, it's all a part of the learning process.
What's next for Project "Happy Ending"
If we were able to further pursue this project, we would continue to improve both parts of the game and eventually join them together to officially complete our project as a whole.
