Inspiration
Our files can quickly become disorganized across Downloads, Desktop, Documents, Pictures, Music, and Videos. Finding the right file, identifying duplicates, and deciding what can be cleaned up can take time and effort.
I wanted to create a simple, friendly desktop application that helps people take control of their digital clutter without making file management more complicated or putting their files at risk.
What it does
The app helps users browse, search, and preview files, suggests better places for them, and identifies old files and duplicates for review. Users stay in control of every move and deletion. Privacy and simplicity are central to the experience. Files remain on the user's computer, and the application does not require a cloud service or external AI model.
How we built it
I developed the app independently with the help of GitHub Copilot. I chose Electron because I'm familiar with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, which allowed me to read, understand, and work with the code Copilot generated. My focus was on building a simple interface with practical file organization features while keeping files stored locally to protect user privacy.
Challenges we ran into
One challenge was turning my ideas into a working app while using GitHub Copilot to help with the code. I had to review and understand the generated code to make sure it matched what I wanted.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I'm proud to have turned my idea into a working desktop application with the help of AI. I brought together file browsing, organization suggestions, and cleanup features in one simple app. I'm especially happy that I could use my existing web development knowledge to guide the process and create something practical that prioritizes user privacy and control.
What we learned
I learned how important planning and having the right questions are when building with AI. Having a clear idea of what I wanted helped me guide GitHub Copilot more effectively, understand its suggestions, and work toward a better result. I realized that AI can speed up development, but knowing what to ask for and reviewing the output makes a big difference.
What's next for Project File Organizer
I'd like to improve the app's organization suggestions and explore AI-assisted file assessment while keeping privacy a priority. I want to find ways to make the app more intelligent without compromising user trust, and continue improving its Windows features and overall experience.
