Inspiration

Following the devastating war in Sudan, millions of people have been displaced from their homes—losing not only shelter and safety but also access to vital information, healthcare, and humanitarian support.

This idea was born from real pain: watching close friends, classmates, and family members become displaced, confused, and disconnected.
"Nuqta" was created as a human-centered digital solution—a simple, lightweight platform that connects displaced Sudanese people to what they need most: information, aid, and hope.

What it does

"Nuqta" is a web and mobile platform designed specifically for displaced communities across Sudan. It includes:

🗺️ Smart Map:

  • Shows nearby vital points: shelters, clinics, water & food sources, psychological support hubs, and local aid providers.

📢 Needs Reporting:

  • Users can submit a simple request (medicine, food, clothing, blankets...), which gets routed to the closest volunteer or organization.

🧠 Mental Health Support – In Sudanese Arabic:

  • Daily audio messages from volunteers or therapists to boost morale.
  • A "Vent" feature where users can record or write what they’re going through, and receive gentle automated replies in Sudanese dialect.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Family Connection:

  • Allows people to securely register basic family info, making reunification easier in the chaos of displacement

    How we built it

We began by identifying the most urgent challenges displaced people face: lack of access to information, aid, and mental support. From there, we designed a low-bandwidth, mobile-first solution using:

  • Figma for the initial wireframes and UI/UX.

  • React Native for a cross-platform mobile app (in progress).

  • Google Maps API for geo-location features.

  • Firebase for lightweight, real-time data storage.

  • OpenAI’s GPT API for chat support in Sudanese Arabic.

The goal was to keep the app accessible even on old smartphones and weak internet connections.

Challenges we ran into

  • Designing an interface accessible to non-tech-savvy users with weak internet and old phones.
  • Building functionality that works without GPS or strong connectivity.
  • Balancing simplicity with impact: how to offer real services without making things complex.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Turning a raw, emotional idea into a structured, scalable concept.
  • Building a prototype that could be easily expanded into real-life field operations.
  • Creating a mental health experience that feels human, local, and culturally sensitive.
  • Designing a solution that puts displaced people at the center — not just as users, but as humans with dignity.

What we learned

Tech is not just about tools. Tech is about people.
This project reminded me how a small digital idea can restore dignity, hope, or even save lives.
We learned to listen to real needs first—not assume them—and to build for inclusion, not just innovation

What's next for نُقطة – منصة رقمية لدعم النازحين السودانيين

  • Build a full working version of the mobile app with offline support.
  • Partner with local and international NGOs to integrate real-time service data.
  • Recruit and train a network of digital volunteers to respond to needs submitted through the platform.
  • Expand the platform to serve Sudanese refugees across borders (in Egypt, Chad, South Sudan, etc.).
  • Launch awareness campaigns to onboard communities in need and ensure wide adoption.

"Nuqta" is just the beginning. We want to turn every displaced person's phone into a lifeline — a point of hope, dignity, and reconnection.
