Inspiration
The buildup, the cut, the aftermath. We were inspired by a common power fantasy, where a single sword strike can split open the earth, sea and sky. Our aim within this project was to recreate this feeling of power in VR and allow players to feel like the badass sword wielder they've always wanted to be.
What it does
Our game is a short but sweet experience where players can hack and slash at their environment, guided by an ever-present ethereal voice. Players can cut, dice and mince the objects around them leading them to increasingly absurd and fantastical targets.
How we built it
Our game was built in Unity and uses a custom cutting algorithm in order to split the meshes. With several coders and artists, our team was well balanced and worked together seamlessly.
Challenges we ran into
The biggest challenge was deciding on how to cut the meshes once a player has slashed with their knife, so that a cut seems natural and makes sense within the given space and input.
Another challenge we had to overcome was scaling and how to communicate large differences in scale to the player effectively.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Most of all we are proud the final product stays true to its inspiration. Standing in the "Temple" and slashing away at ever more ridiculous targets feels empowering, satisfying and fun.
What we learned
For some in our team, who had not yet worked much in VR, this project was a great learning opportunity for understanding how to design environments and games in a true 3D-Space.
What's next for That time I accidentally cut the universe in half
The next steps would be to find a fun and interesting game-loop to underline our satisfying main mechanic and to further refine and work on the visual style and overall presentation.
