Repo Pilot — Your AI Copilot for GitHub Repositories

Inspiration

Understanding an unfamiliar codebase can be time-consuming, especially when developers need to trace functionality across files, understand dependencies, or identify where a problem originates. We wanted to make repository exploration faster and more accessible.

Repo Pilot aims to bridge the gap between a GitHub repository and the developer trying to understand it by providing an AI-assisted way to explore code and work with repository context.

What It Does

Repo Pilot is an AI-powered assistant designed to help developers interact with their GitHub repositories more efficiently.

Our vision is to make repository exploration more intuitive by bringing useful code context and AI assistance into one workflow.

Depending on the capabilities available in the current implementation, Repo Pilot can help developers:

  • Connect and explore selected GitHub repositories.
  • Understand repository structure and relevant code.
  • Ask questions about a codebase using repository context.
  • Investigate potential issues and navigate unfamiliar projects faster.

How We Built It

We designed Repo Pilot around a modern web application architecture, with a focus on modular components, secure integrations, and a clean developer experience.

The planned technology stack includes Next.js with the App Router, React, TypeScript, shadcn/ui, Neon PostgreSQL, and Drizzle ORM. Better Auth is intended to manage authentication, while GitHub App integration provides a controlled way to connect repositories.

AI capabilities are intended to use the available model infrastructure to process repository context and generate useful developer assistance.

Only technologies and integrations that are actually implemented should be considered part of the finished system.

Challenges

Some of the key engineering challenges include handling GitHub authorization securely, working with repository data, keeping database access organized, and designing an interface that makes AI-generated assistance useful rather than overwhelming.

We also had to consider how to keep the architecture modular so that authentication, repository access, persistence, and AI functionality can evolve independently.

What We Learned

This project reinforced the importance of designing around real developer workflows rather than adding AI for its own sake. Useful AI assistance depends on relevant context, reliable integrations, clear error handling, and a user interface that makes results easy to understand.

What's Next

Our next steps are to improve repository understanding, strengthen context-aware assistance, expand code navigation capabilities, and make the workflow more reliable for real-world development projects.
