Inspiration

We wanted to be able to connect with other students in an easier manner than done previously before.

What it does

The application we made is a web application that allows users (BYU-I) students to create accounts and create events and posts for what is going on around town. It allows users to RSVP to these events and see who is going to them. There is also an easy Calander function to see what is going on during that month. Overall we wanted to make an easier UI that is faster and not overwhelming. Lastly we wanted it to be independently owned so that students had more freedom in creating things going around town.

How we built it

We built this application using node.js and React to render the front end. The back end runs on an AWS EC2 Instance, use Node JS for our API and MariaDB for out database.

Challenges we ran into

Learning how to use React for the first time was a struggle for all of us. We ran into some issues with initializing the server but we got that squared away within the first few hours. CSS styling was a constant issue on trying to make sure the theme was uniform. We ran into a couple node issues installing packages and node itself. Lastly we had to restructure our database to fit everything our frontend supported.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We were able to get a lot of the features we wanted to. The backend works seamlessly with the frontend at reasonable speeds. The UI is very pleasing and simple to use.

What we learned

We learned how to do research and work together especially on a idea that we have never used before.

What's next for The Burg

We want to make the UI a bit more flushed out. We would also like to add a ridesharing feature that would allow students to ask for rides on events they are planning on attending. We would also like to add more social features like friending, sharing, and messaging with in the app to help connect the community.
