Inspiration

Long-term change is difficult to notice from one day to the next. Progress photos often get lost in a camera roll, and turning them into a useful comparison or timelapse usually requires several different editing tools. I built FarSee to make that entire process simple, private, and enjoyable.

What it does

FarSee is a visual progress journal for transformations worth remembering. Users can capture or import a photo or video each day, organize moments into separate projects, and browse their progress through a calendar.

FarSee can turn selected moments into customizable timelapse videos, create before-and-after comparisons, and build milestone collages containing photos and videos. Users can adjust framing, dates, ordering, aspect ratio, music, video audio, and export quality.

Projects and media remain on the user's device. No FarSee account or cloud-media service is required, and portable backup and restore are included.

Monetization and RevenueCat

The free version lets users create their first project and export branded progress videos. FarSee Premium unlocks unlimited projects, the flexible free-form layout, Full HD exports, background music, and clean exports without the FarSee watermark.

RevenueCat manages the current product offering, purchases, restoration, and the farsee_pro entitlement. Premium prompts appear at relevant moments, such as creating another project or selecting a premium export option.

How I built it

FarSee is built with Flutter and Dart for iOS and Android. Drift and SQLite provide offline-first local storage. FFmpeg powers the mixed photo-and-video export pipeline. RevenueCat manages purchases and entitlements, while Firebase Analytics, Crashlytics, and Remote Config help monitor and improve the experience.

Challenges

The most difficult part was building a reliable media pipeline that could combine photos and video clips with different dimensions, orientations, durations, and audio settings. Another challenge was keeping previews, before-and-after layouts, collages, and final exports visually consistent while preserving an offline-first privacy model.

Accomplishments

I am proud that FarSee combines daily tracking, editing, comparisons, collages, and video export in one cohesive mobile experience. The app launched publicly on the App Store on September 22, 2026.

What I learned

Building FarSee reinforced the importance of testing real purchase states, cancellation, restoration, media edge cases, and long-running exports on physical devices. RevenueCat made it possible to keep product configuration separate from the app's premium-access logic.

What's next

Next I plan to expand export templates, improve onboarding based on early feedback, and experiment with RevenueCat offerings and paywall presentation to find the clearest premium experience.
