Inspiration
Modern medicine is convoluted. It’s reactive, rather than proactive. There are also so many conditions, potentially lifelong, that are very disruptive and are under diagnosed. These deserve more attention for how much it could negatively impact patients lives. We wanted to approach this by making sure that our data is very well synthesized and representative of patient’s holistic health profile while also incorporating ways to prevent genetic diseases, particularly in the Rare Disease space. We also got inspiration from family members with conditions, such as ALS and the people who experience this real issue in our day-to-day, alongside the overworked physicians experience with patient Data and the EHR.
What it does
Clinical Decision Support for doctors. Identifies high risk for certain drugs and conditions based on patient’s genetic sequence, biomarkers, and additional background data
How we built it
We started by researching gene mutations, focusing on how they can be linked to different diseases and health conditions. This research formed the foundation for our platform and guided the features we decided to integrate.
Challenges we ran into
One of the biggest challenges we faced was with VEP. Initially, we even tried running it through a Google Chrome instance, but eventually had to pivot. Another difficulty was converging on a single idea to pursue, since we were juggling multiple directions. Accessing reliable DNA sequences was also tough. Beyond the technical hurdles, it was challenging for our tech-focused team to fully understand the biology side of things and reach consensus on which features would make sense scientifically.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Despite the challenges, we successfully integrated multiple features into one ecosystem. This achievement gave us confidence that our idea could provide real value in combining bioinformatics with technology.
What we learned
Our tech team gained meaningful insights into gene mutations and their connection to diseases and allergies.
What's next for Progonomix
We plan to add more tools on the platform to assist doctors with analysis and decision-making. Additionally, we want to expand into a patient-facing platform so that individuals can directly benefit from the insights our system provides.
