Inspiration
The inspiration behind ProgKids came from the desire to make coding accessible and enjoyable for children. We noticed that many educational platforms were either too complex or too boring for kids, so we wanted to create something that would capture their interest through fun and familiar games like Minecraft and Roblox.
What it does
ProgKids is an online platform that teaches programming to children aged 7-17 through interactive, game-based lessons. It uses popular games like Minecraft and Roblox to introduce coding concepts in a way that's engaging and easy to understand. The platform offers courses in both Russian and English, catering to a global audience.
How I built it
ProgKids was built by combining educational theory with gaming technology. We developed a unique curriculum that aligns with coding principles and integrated it with Minecraft and Roblox. The platform was created with a focus on user experience, ensuring that both children and parents find it easy to navigate and use. We collaborated with educators and developers to ensure the content was both educationally sound and technically robust.
Challenges I ran into
One of the biggest challenges was creating a curriculum that was both educationally rigorous and fun for kids. We also faced technical challenges in integrating coding lessons seamlessly into Minecraft and Roblox. Additionally, ensuring that the platform could cater to both Russian and English speakers required careful planning and execution.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
We’re proud of creating a platform that truly makes coding accessible and fun for kids. Seeing the excitement and enthusiasm from students as they learn to code through games has been incredibly rewarding. We’re also proud of our ability to offer bilingual courses, making ProgKids available to a broader audience.
What I learned
Through building ProgKids, we learned the importance of balancing education with entertainment. Kids learn best when they’re engaged and having fun, so it’s crucial to create content that captures their interest. We also learned a lot about the technical aspects of integrating educational content into gaming platforms.
What's next for ProgKids
Next, we plan to expand ProgKids by adding more games and programming languages to our curriculum. We’re also looking into creating more advanced courses for older students or those who want to dive deeper into coding. Additionally, we aim to build a community around ProgKids where students can share their projects and collaborate on coding challenges.
