Inspiration

The world of finance can be daunting, particularly for outsiders. We developed ProfitAly following the experience of friends and loved ones struggling with investment choices—sometimes taking tips from social media or jumping on trends without research.

Our goal was to democratize financial guidance through AI and gamify learning to make finance approachable. ProfitAly bridges the gap between complex financial data and actionable knowledge for everyone.

What It Does

ProfitAly is a financial advisor platform offering AI-driven insights and interactive learning experiences:

  • Smart Advisor: AI chatbot analyzes user profiles and gives customized stock suggestions with clear reasoning.
  • Fantasy Trading Competitions: Risk-free simulations where users can compete, experiment, and learn from each other.
  • Structured Financial Insights: Standardized suggestion format with summary highlights, real-time data, and AI explanations.
  • Multi-context Understanding: Identifies question types (general, stock-specific, portfolio) and tailors responses accordingly.
  • Educational Resources: Provides tutorials and explanations for financial terms, making it beginner-friendly.

How We Built It

Frontend

  • React (v18.3.1) with TypeScript
  • Vite for fast builds and hot module reload
  • TailwindCSS and Shadcn UI (based on Radix UI)
  • Framer Motion for animations

AI Integration

  • Integrated Perplexity API to power the financial chatbot
  • Tailored prompt engineering for consistent and relevant financial responses

Financial Information

  • Twelve Data and Finnhub APIs for real-time and historical stock data

Backend and Storage

  • Firebase for authentication, Firestore (NoSQL DB), cloud functions, and storage

Visualization

  • Chart.js and Recharts for visualizing stock performance and trends

Context-Aware Responses

  • Custom query system to retain conversation history and adjust outputs based on past user interactions

Challenges We Encountered

  • AI Response Quality: Required careful prompt design and fallbacks for inconsistent API outputs
  • Real-time Data Integration: Managed API rate limits and outages with caching and backup data feeds
  • Context Management: Balanced memory usage and relevance in conversation history
  • User Experience Design: Made complex financial data accessible through iterative UX testing
  • Cross-platform Compatibility: Optimized rendering pipeline for consistent performance on all devices
