Inspiration
First, I read the different categories that the Hackathon was offering. The first two that stuck out to me were "Most Polished Game" and "Best Meme/Joke Hack." From then on, I thought of the quickest idea that could satisfy both of those requirements. At the time, the funniest thing I could think of was what it was like to be a professor receiving many reviews based on how students performed in the course. I thought it seemed like an idea I could pull off with my limited time.
What it does
The game is simple. It will give you tests that your students have completed, and it is up to you to give them a grade from 0 to 10.
Challenges we ran into
There were a lot of features and techniques that I did not really know how to execute in Unity off of the top of my head. Thus, a lot of searching was needed in order for me to successfully pull off features such as:
- Creating UI with working buttons
- Randomly generating pictures and putting them on the UI
- Making the game run on a loop until certain conditions are met However, my biggest challenge was time. I had quite a busy weekend, and thus, I was only really able to spend about 10 hours on this project in total. This is much shorter than the 36 hours given initially.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I am most proud of my UI work. As mentioned earlier, I had never done a UI in Unity before, so getting this to work made me feel more confident in my abilities. The fact that the game works at all is my biggest achievement, as I never got the chance to do something like this before.
What we learned
My biggest takeaway with this project was how to create UIs in Unity. Now that I know how, I think it should be a lot easier for me going forward, whenever I create another game. Additionally, I was able to make a semi-stable game loop, which I hope I can improve on as I work on more projects.
What's next for Professor Simulator
Originally, I wanted to include more of my own sprite work in the game. I was hoping to make the title screen, and some of the buttons, backgrounds, and canvases be in pixel art. Additionally, I wanted to make the option for students to ask for regrades, so the player would have to go through regrades as well. These will come next after the initial release.
