Inspiration
The US Space Economy is growing rapidly, contributing billions of dollars annually. However, measuring the efficiency of growth is equally important as measuring its scale. Labor productivity, the output per worker, is a useful metric that tells us how the industry is using its workforce. We wanted to model the trends of each industry to help businesses, policy makers, and researchers understand where each industry is headed.
What it does
We built an interactive website that allows users to choose a specific industry within the space economy and directs them to another page with the graphical visualizations showing employment, output, and labor productivity. This allows users to compare industries to identify where productivity is rising or falling.
How we built it
Firstly, we used pandas to clean our data, calculate productivity, and produce data visualizations for each industry. We then designed a simple yet functional website using HTML and CSS, and embedded the graphs. This way, anyone can quickly visualize and interpret the efficiency or the workforce within each industry.
Challenges we ran into
It was difficult to pin down an idea we wanted to work on, as well as create a project that challenged us, but we could reasonably complete in the time frame. Being able to access the exact pieces of data we wanted use for our calculations wasn't easy, but we persisted!
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We successfully built a fully functioning and informative project and designed visualizations that tell a clear story for each industry. Though it's a beginner-friendly tool, it is still useful for policymakers and businesses.
What we learned
We learned how to transform datasets into meaningful insights. Furthermore, we learned the importance of sharing this data and its insightful trends with users in a simple yet informative way.
What's next for Productivity Lens
Moving forward, we would love to expand our dashboard to include forecasts for productivity in each industry and integrate interactive comparisons (industry side-by-side).
