Inspiration
For the past week, a friend and I have been one and a half hour long 'mini hacks,' focused on either tackling a complex issue, or learning a new skill. Since this started, we have both agreed this has been one of the most productive weeks we have had in months
What it does
Register an account, build a group, and run short sprints with your team. Set your own goals, or choose from one of the basic suggestions.
How I built it
The backend was build in Node.js with Express.js. It was deployed to Azure, and used the Cosmos DB. The frontend was build in React using Redux, and deployed to surge.sh
Challenges I ran into
The inevitable feature creep. I had set my sights a bit too broad, and was unable to fulfill some of the ideas in just a short amount of time. The lack of sleep also didn't help my judgment, and because of that, I caught myself making rather foolish mistakes.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
I built this entirely by myself. Even if it is not my original vision, I stuck it through to the end. I also learned how to deploy to Azure, how to use the Twilio API, and how to use Cosmos DB
What I learned
Always scale back ideas. Implement them later if the basics are finished. As stated above, I also learned how to deploy to Azure, how to use the Twilio API, and how to use Cosmos DB.
What's next for Productathon
I plan on incorporating websockets for live discussion during groups, as well as having a timer that all can see. I plan on incorporating a Skype API to use video chat, rather than having to rely on an external app. I will add email links to join groups, in addition to the Twilio API. Styling will also need to be touched on (or rather, completely overhauled).
