Inspiration

College life is a constant tug-of-war between motivation and mental exhaustion. Between balancing classes, clubs, and personal life, most productivity apps feel robotic or guilt-driven, much like a boss screaming instructions at you, and not a buddy helping you grow.

We wanted to change that. ProcrastiNOT was built to feel human, a friendly mentor that helps students understand why they procrastinate, manage their time and energy, and get back on track without the burnout.

It’s your AI-powered accountability buddy that turns procrastination into progress and helps you work smarter, not later.

What it does

ProcrastiNOT helps college students cut through the chaos of student life and get work done — fast, efficiently, and without burnout. It acts as an AI-powered productivity companion that understands your mood, energy, and workload to guide you toward better time and energy management. By combining mood tracking, smart task organization, and personalized focus suggestions, ProcrastiNOT helps turn procrastination into steady, meaningful progress.

ProcrastiNOT includes:

Mood Check-In Dashboard: We’ve built a mood check-in dashboard where users can log their emotional state and energy levels. The interface adapts its theme and tone based on the user inputs, creating a more human experience. It also tracks weekly emotional trends and gently guides users back on track when motivation dips, just like a supportive mentor. It also has an XP system through which the user can earn point by completing tasks and deadlines, and unlock accessories for our mascot - Slothonaut!

Smart Task Manager: More than just a simple to-do list, this AI-powered task manager helps students organize their workload efficiently. Users can add tasks with details such as duration, importance, and deadlines, and the system automatically prioritizes them using AI insights for smarter time management.

Study Log: A personal productivity diary for those who prefer manual tracking. Students can log their study sessions and, with a single click, get personalized AI feedback and reflections to improve consistency and focus.

AI Focus Suggestions: Powered by the Gemini API, ProcrastiNOT analyzes patterns in mood, productivity, and task habits to suggest optimal focus periods and breaks. Instead of guilt-driven notifications, it offers subtle nudges and reminders that promote self-awareness without pressure or burnout.

How we built it

Frontend: TypeScript and HTML for structure and dynamic visuals. Backend: Node.js with Express for data handling and API communication. AI Integration: Google Gemini API for intelligent productivity insights. Version Control: GitHub for collaboration and real-time merging between front-end and back-end teams.

Challenges We Ran Into

With limited backend experience, integrating the Gemini API into our Node.js server proved to be one of our biggest technical challenges. We had to learn how to manage requests, handle authentication, and ensure smooth data flow between the frontend and backend, and all under intense time pressure. Getting both sides of the stack to communicate properly took late-night debugging sessions and a lot of persistence when we kept getting errors which we could not understand the meaning of. On top of that, none of us had used Google Studio AI before, so understanding its capabilities and integrating it effectively was another major hurdle. Since this was the first hackathon for two of our three team members, we also had to quickly adapt to working in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.

Despite these obstacles, each challenge became a learning opportunity. We developed a stronger understanding of full-stack development, improved our technical communication, and gained confidence in tackling new technologies together.

Accomplishments We’re Proud Of

We built a fully functioning full-stack application with AI integration in under 36 hours which is a huge achievement considering none of us had any prior fullstack experience. Along the way, we learned how to set up a Node.js server, connect it to the frontend, and integrate the Google Gemini API to power our app’s intelligent features. Beyond the technical milestones, we’re proud of how quickly we adapted, learned, and collaborated under pressure. This project showed us how much we can accomplish when we push past our comfort zones and combine our strengths as a team.

What's next for ProcrastiNOT

We plan to integrate Google Calendar and Canvas, so students can sync assignments and deadlines seamlessly. The AI will gain deeper focus insights, offering more personalized productivity guidance. To keep users engaged, we’re exploring a gamified reward system that celebrates progress. Long-term, we aim to launch mobile and Chrome extension versions, making ProcrastiNOT a comprehensive, AI-powered academic companion that helps students work smarter, not later.
