What We Found

We found that rodent evidence and 311 reporting do not always align across NYC ZIP codes. Some ZIP codes have relatively high rodent evidence from restaurant inspections but much lower levels of 311 reporting, revealing potential service and reporting gaps.

What We Excluded

We excluded records with missing or invalid ZIP codes, as well as duplicate records, to prevent inaccurate or repeated data from affecting our analysis.

Biggest Limitation

Our biggest limitation is that the two datasets do not measure rodent activity in the same way. Restaurant inspection data only captures rodent evidence found at inspected food establishments, while 311 complaints can come from residents reporting problems throughout a ZIP code. Because of this, comparing the two provides a useful signal, but they are not a perfect one-to-one comparison of rodent conditions.

If I worked for the city, I would increase outreach in neighborhoods with low 311 reporting, because our data shows that some ZIP codes report fewer complaints despite evidence of rodent problems.
