Inspiration
Ash works with Hope UofSC, a non-profit organization that 3D prints free prosthesis for children in need. The problem that his organization has run into is having requests from people not only across the US but also across the world. It became difficult to be able to get measurements from parents, as well as the instructions sent made it so difficult parents gave up in frustration, ruining a child's hope to get a 3D printed hand. The app would streamline instructions as well as measurement taking for the parents, making the process faster and easier.
What it does
The app was envisioned to be able to run on iPhone and Android. It would allow parents to login, create a request, and take pictures of the limbs of a child with instructions guiding the parents along. These instructions could be handed over as on screen prompts, Augmented Reality, or virtual rulers on screen guiding the parents along. At the end, they are able to submit this all, which would be sent to a database. Then, Hope UofSC would be able to access these documents and be able to create an arm or hand for a child in need.
How we built it
We used Ionic to build a cross platform app. It is integrated with Firebase so that we could store patient information and the images and measurements.
Challenges we ran into
Since most of the group was new to programming real world applications, we ran into a lot of issues getting things rolling. Ionics routing methods was new to me, and most of us had never programmed as well. The submitted code doesn't really work well, and is very bare bones a frame of what we really envisioned.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We started making something in spite of the inexperience and obstacles in our way. We we're committed to learning something new and making something.
What we learned
Jonathan learned how to use Git. I've learned more about a new framework. Ashley and Lindsey have gotten to see the inside working of programming and development.
What's next for pro-colahacks
We will take what we have learned here and apply it where we can. The things we learned and the experiences here are very valuable.
