Inspiration
The new Black Lives Matter movement gained many followers around the world in these past few months after being all over social media. It shows that movements like these have great potential once publicized. We wanted to spread awareness about other topics, too, and help people engage in activism as all social medias and other internet sources had done for BLM.
What it does
Pro-Activism educates and informs readers about different topics of activism in recent times, using location, websites open for donation, and methods of change. The user can click through the tabs to view information about racial justice, gender equality, LGBTQ rights, Climate Change protests happening around the world. The search bar in the first tab allows users to enter their location and see which movement is big in that area. Each tab (regarding the movements) includes some info about the movement, where it is, and how they can help make a change.
How I built it
We used Xcode and SwiftUI to build our app.
Challenges I ran into
We are new to code, and not very familiar with Xcode itself. So much of our time was spent navigating the tool and figuring out the features it had, and how we could utilize them. Making the tab bar and adding images was especially difficult, as well as implementing the search bar.
Our team only consisted of two people, so it was a big task for each of us. In addition, we couldn't out how to share the file so we could both edit on separate devices. Instead the project was only on one computer and we had to share a device to work on the app.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
We actually produced a decent-looking app (multi-tab format) that could be functional and usable if a few further features are added. Even though the search bar isn't very good yet, it is one of our big accomplishments in the app.
What I learned
Since we are new to coding, we learnt a lot about coding. Firstly, we learned that you can't really learn it like how you learn math. We spent a lot of time learning how to code in Swift, and ended up not using it a lot-only for the search bar code. Secondly, when we looked at some Xcode videos and saw that they didn't directly relate to our project, we had to figure it out for ourselves which included a lot of trial and error. Control + z was our friend after we clicked around and made our app go wonky. Lastly, we learned that you need to have patience for coding- like a lot of patience. Especially during the trial and errors and when Xcode was too slow, we had to remind ourselves and each other to be patient.
What's next for Pro-Activism App
We want to further the search bar tab so users can look up locations and connect it with the internet so that the user can see when protests or demonstrations are going to be held in the future and when they were held in the past. In addition, we'd like our app to connect to the internet so that it can detect all protests and new locations.
