Inspiration
As sports fanatics, we've always been seeking an interactive sports experience. We're also passionate about designing intuitive user interfaces, so the opportunity to create an experience which made sports more engaging during HackGT was really exciting.
What it does
This app transforms the sports experience to be more interactive, allowing users to engage more with their Parlays. The core features include live sports coverage and updates, game predictions, interactive polls, watch parties to enjoy sports with friends, and key highlights which users can watch.
How we built it
We built this app with React Native and used Expo for development and testing. React Context was used for state management and WebSocket for live updates. Typescript was used for type safety, and AsyncStorage was used to store data locally. To optimize the performance of the app, we used the Expo Asset API.
Challenges we ran into
Testing the app was one of the main challenges we faced since React Native apps require a unique testing approach. There were network issues when loading the app in Expo at times which prevented viewing the app directly from a phone. Additionally, it took some time to figure out how to implement some of the functionalities we wanted to integrate in our project.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We successfully built a really functional app that is user intuitive and enhances the fan experience.
What we learned
We learned how to use React Native to build this project, and we learned that designing a mobile app requires extensive testing which taught us the importance of persistence. Debugging and overcoming network and testing issues required patience and teamwork.
What's next for PrizePicks Live
The next step will be to continue the process and monitor user reactions and feedback.
We'll think of new features to add and improve existing ones and potentially work on further developing this new experience to increase engagement and foster community among sports fans.
