Inspiration
Digital procurement depends on competition, but traditional online bidding can expose sensitive pricing information. Once competing bidders know each other's prices, they can adjust their strategies, creating opportunities for unfair competition.
We wanted to build a system where bidders could compete without revealing their bids, while the final outcome could still be verified.
That idea led to PrivateBid — a privacy-preserving sealed-bid platform designed for digital procurement and civil infrastructure contracting.
The core principle is simple:
Fair bids. Private prices. Verifiable outcomes.
What it does
PrivateBid allows organizations to create procurement auctions where participants can submit confidential bids.
The platform provides:
- Private sealed-bid submission
- Midnight wallet integration
- Auction creation and management
- Auction deadlines and status tracking
- Privacy-preserving bid processing
- Winner determination
- Verifiable auction results
- Selective disclosure of auction information
- Public result verification
During an active auction, competitors do not need to see each other's bid amounts.
Once the auction closes, PrivateBid can present the winning result while keeping competing bid information private.
This makes the platform particularly useful for infrastructure procurement, construction contracts, government tenders, and other competitive bidding environments where pricing confidentiality matters.
How we built it
PrivateBid was built as a modern web application with a privacy-first architecture.
Frontend
We used:
- React
- TypeScript
- Vite
- Tailwind CSS
- React Router
The interface was designed to feel more like professional procurement infrastructure than a traditional crypto application.
Privacy & Blockchain Layer
The core privacy functionality is built around the Midnight Network and its privacy-preserving smart contract technology.
We use:
- Midnight
- Compact smart contracts
- Midnight.js
- Midnight wallet connectivity
The architecture separates public auction information from sensitive bidding information, allowing the application to preserve bid confidentiality while maintaining a verifiable auction lifecycle.
