Inspiration

COVID-19 is causing boundary collapse for many of us -- our homes are now also our schools, our workplaces, our social event spaces, and much more. This boundary collapse is accelerated by technology, such as video meetings or course proctoring tools.

What it does

In this project, we have designed, conducted, and analyzed a survey examining specific privacy concerns related to this boundary collapse: what new privacy concerns do people have? What coping strategies are they using? Have they experienced any adverse consequences?

How I built it

We used Qualtrics to develop the survey, and R and JMP to analyze the survey results.

Challenges I ran into

Due to our time constraints, we only had time to collect data from 32 participants (30 of which completed the survey).

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

Our group managed to complete a stand-alone survey analysis project in just one weekend.

What I learned

We drew three primary conclusions:

  1. As the number of meeting attendees rise, the comfort level for turning on the camera decreases.
  2. People are more interested in hiding their faces than hiding their names in a meeting.
  3. People are more likely to hold back from participating when they know that the meeting is being recorded.

What's next for Privacy Concerns Related to COVID-19 Boundary Collapse

To obtain more conclusive results in the future, we could release this survey for a longer period of time to get more survey participants.
