Inspiration

Climate change is no longer just an environmental issue—it is a public health challenge that disproportionately affects vulnerable populations, particularly women across different stages of life. Existing health risk assessments rarely combine climate hazards, social determinants of health, and sex-specific biological factors into a single, personalised experience. We wanted to bridge that gap by creating Prisma, an AI-powered platform that transforms complex climate-health data into actionable insights while making the assessment engaging through the metaphor of growing a plant.

What it does

Prisma is an AI-powered web and mobile application that delivers personalised climate and health risk assessments. Users complete a guided questionnaire where each completed section helps a virtual plant grow—from a seed to a flourishing plant—symbolising resilience and wellbeing.

The platform securely collects demographic, environmental, lifestyle and health information, then combines it with climate hazards such as heatwaves, flooding and drought, alongside local environmental conditions and social determinants of health. Prisma generates a personalised risk profile, monitoring recommendations, preventative actions, emergency guidance and location-aware notifications. Privacy is embedded through secure data handling and GDPR-compliant design.

How we built it

We designed Prisma using a user-centred approach that combines AI with evidence-based climate and public health research. Our framework integrates climate risk data, environmental indicators, women's health research, and social determinants of health into a single assessment engine.

The application follows a plant-growth journey to simplify data collection, while the AI analyses multiple risk factors—including biological sex, reproductive life stage, ethnicity, environmental exposure, housing, lifestyle and local climate—to generate personalised recommendations. The platform is designed to support both web and mobile experiences with notification capabilities for changing climate conditions.

Challenges we ran into

One of our biggest challenges was balancing scientific accuracy with an intuitive user experience. Climate-health relationships are highly interconnected, requiring us to combine environmental hazards, health research and social factors without overwhelming users.

Another challenge was ensuring the platform remained inclusive by accounting for different life stages, demographic backgrounds and environmental contexts while maintaining strict privacy and data protection standards. Translating complex policy and research into simple, actionable recommendations also required careful design.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're proud of creating a solution that brings together climate science, public health and AI into a single personalised platform. Rather than focusing only on environmental risks, Prisma recognises that health outcomes are shaped by biological, social and environmental factors simultaneously.

The plant-growth experience transforms a traditional questionnaire into an engaging journey, encouraging users to complete assessments while visualising their progress. We're also proud that privacy, accessibility and inclusivity were considered from the beginning rather than added later.

What we learned

Building Prisma reinforced the importance of interdisciplinary thinking. Effective climate adaptation requires collaboration between healthcare, environmental science, technology and policy.

We also learned that personalised communication is essential. Presenting complex health and climate information in an engaging, visual and easy-to-understand format can significantly improve user engagement and awareness. Finally, we recognised the critical need for sex-disaggregated health research and equitable AI systems that better represent diverse populations.

What's next for Prisma

Our next step is to integrate real-time environmental and health datasets, including weather alerts, flood monitoring and air quality data, to provide dynamic risk assessments. We also plan to incorporate wearable device integration, longitudinal health tracking and predictive AI models that adapt recommendations as conditions change.

Future versions will support healthcare providers, researchers and local authorities with anonymised population-level insights while maintaining individual privacy. Ultimately, Prisma aims to become a trusted climate-health companion that empowers individuals, supports preventative healthcare and strengthens community resilience in a changing climate.
