Inspiration
Priority was inspired by the chaos of student group chats. In every project group, important tasks, deadlines, and updates get buried under random messages, jokes, memes, and off-topic conversations. Sometimes people are too shy to ask questions, even when they are confused.
Priority solves that by acting like a smart AI group buddy. It helps students quickly understand what happened, what they need to do, and what is still unanswered.
What it does
Priority is an AI-powered group chat assistant. It can:
- summarize messy conversations
- extract tasks and responsibilities
- track progress updates
- answer questions using chat context
- ask the group named or anonymous questions
- save answered questions for everyone
- turn Priority ON or OFF per chat for privacy
How we built it
We built Priority as a WhatsApp-style mobile app using Expo React Native and TypeScript. The backend is built with Node.js and Express, hosted on Replit. The app connects to K2 Think V2 through the backend, so the API key stays secure and never touches the phone.
Challenges
The hardest part was making the AI understand group chat context properly. It needed to know when to answer privately, when to ask the group, and when not to post random casual messages publicly. We also added demo fallback mode so the app still works even if the AI API is unavailable.
What we learned
We learned how to connect a mobile app to a secure backend, use an AI API safely, design realistic demo flows, and turn a messy everyday problem into a working prototype.
What’s next
Next, Priority could become a real extension for WhatsApp, Slack, Discord, or university group platforms. Future versions could include login, real databases, notifications, calendar integration, and stronger privacy controls.
