PrintMatrix was inspired by a common problem I observed in schools and offices where multiple staff members share network printers, but printing is often inconvenient, limited to a specific computer, or difficult to manage. I wanted to create a cloud-based solution that allows users to securely upload documents, select any available printer, and submit print jobs from anywhere while giving administrators full control over printers, users, and print queues through a centralized dashboard.
I built PrintMatrix using React, Node.js, Express, PostgreSQL, and Sequelize, with JWT authentication, Multer for file handling, and CUPS to manage printing. A lightweight Print Agent installed on computers within an organization's network securely communicates with the cloud server, downloads pending print jobs, and sends them to the correct local printer. This architecture makes the system scalable across multiple offices without exposing printers directly to the internet.
Building PrintMatrix taught me a great deal about distributed systems, Linux server administration, networking, secure API design, and production deployment. One of the biggest challenges was designing reliable communication between the cloud application and on-premise print agents while ensuring jobs were routed to the correct printer. Going forward, I plan to add real-time notifications, printer health monitoring, usage analytics, mobile support, and print quotas to make PrintMatrix a complete enterprise print management platform.
