Inspiration
We saw the Princeton Fox, and we thought it might be nice to have a website that compiles fox sightings. Earlier this week (November 10th), we received an email about our school wanting information on the deer population to improve deer and natural resource management. Hearing about how there has been an increase in fox sightings in Princeton since 2020 and how prior alumni did not even have a campus fox, signified a growth in fox sightings on campus despite a lack of a primary database for this information. We hope this site not only compiles fox sightings but also helps improve any decisions concerning fox management on campus.
What it does
This website lets users report sightings of the fox and upload pictures into a location database.
How we built it
We used JavaScript, HTML, and CSS to make a basic site that uses MongoDB for database storage and Google Maps for marker generation.
Challenges we ran into
As beginners, we had no idea how to separate things into the frontend and backend in the beginning. We spent hours figuring out how to connect our frontend in HTML/CSS to nodeJS.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud that we even got a semi-finished product.
What we learned
We learned very, very basic web development and GitHub.
What's next for Princeton Fox
We want to make our database integration actually functional.
