Inspiration
We were inspired by the PSRJ also known as the Princeton Student for Reproductive Justice as they handed out contraceptives to students, anonymously. So we wanted to create a website that facilities the access of reproductive healthcare products to Princeton students.
What it does
Our website allows students to order reproductive health products, anonymously, and then sends these orders to students that can deliver these products in association with student groups such as PSRJ. The colorful, welcoming design is meant to make the students feel more comfortable and less intimidated by these products that can sometimes seem not very accessible to them.
How we built it
We built the backend using Flask and connected it to a MySQL database that contains user, order, and delivery information. We then used Streamlit for the frontend meaning that most of our project was in Python which is the language we are the most familiar with. We leveraged certain libraries such as SQLAlchemy to help us produce our website. We also focused heavily on the ui/design and used css to style our website into a fun, bright website.
Challenges we ran into
One main challenge was the planning as this was our first hackathon. We could have definitely been more efficient with our time management and also set specific goals that we wanted to accomplish within a certain timeframe. We also struggled to use streamlit and other technologies that some of us were not very familiar with.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of creating a product that can greatly benefit the student community and that can contribute towards breaking down the stigma surrounding healthcare products. We strive to empower college students and allow them to be comfortable with themselves.
What we learned
We learned the importance of proper planning and also establishing team roles in order to improve efficiency. We also learned more about individuals technologies and also more general knowledge through all the very well structured workshops that made for excellent learning opportunities.
What's next for Princeton Care Package
Scalability and uploading the website to the cloud so that our product can reach a wider audience beyond just Princeton.
