PricePilot: A World-Class Price Comparison Engine
🌟 Inspiration
PricePilot was born from a simple frustration: the modern shopping experience is fragmented. Finding the absolute lowest price for a product often requires opening multiple tabs, manually comparing shipping costs, and filtering through noise. I wanted to build a tool that doesn't just "list" prices, but pilots the user directly to the best possible deal with total transparency and zero friction. The goal was to create a premium shopping experience—one that feels as trustworthy as Google Shopping but as fast and sleek as a modern fintech application.
🚀 What it does
PricePilot is a high-performance price comparison engine that allows users to find the best deals across the web instantly.
- Real-Time Indexing: Fetches live pricing and availability from trusted retailers via the Google Shopping index.
- Instant Comparison: Provides a high-density grid of offers, sorted by price, allowing users to see the "Lowest Price" at a glance.
- Tactile UX: Features a professional, responsive interface with a "glass-morphism" header, integrated search, and a "Compare" system to track specific deals.
- Trust-First Design: Implements a strict design system focusing on transparency, featuring retailer badges, verified ratings, and real-time shipping information.
🛠 How we built it
We used a cutting-edge stack to ensure the platform is fast, stable, and visually stunning:
- Core Framework: Next.js 14 (App Router) for optimized server-side rendering and seamless transitions.
- Type Safety: TypeScript in strict mode to prevent data regressions between the API and the UI.
- Styling & UI: Tailwind CSS for a utility-first approach and shadcn/ui for accessible, high-quality components.
- Motion Engine: A combination of GSAP (for high-end, staggered entrance sequences) and Framer Motion (for micro-interactions like hover-lifts and button scales).
- Data Layer: Integrated SerpApi for live data fetching and NextAuth.js for secure user authentication and session management.
🚧 Challenges we ran into
- Fighting "AI Slop": The biggest hurdle was avoiding the generic, bland UI patterns often suggested by AI. We overcame this by implementing a strict "Elite UI" specification, mandating precise spacing scales and high-contrast typography to ensure the site felt "hand-crafted."
- The Layout Shift: Initial loading states caused the page to jump. We solved this by engineering ProductCardSkeleton components that perfectly mimic the final card dimensions, resulting in a "zero-jump" loading experience.
- Data Normalization: API data from different retailers is often inconsistent. We built a robust normalization layer to ensure prices, shipping texts, and ratings are formatted consistently across the entire UI.
- Auth Loopholes: We discovered a logic gap where passwords could be created without matching the confirmation field. We fixed this by implementing a strict validation interceptor in the SignUpForm.
🏆 Accomplishments that we're proud of
- The "Elite" Visuals: Successfully transforming a raw prototype into a professional-grade interface that feels like a top-tier commercial product.
- Tactile Performance: Achieving a smooth 60fps experience by limiting animations to transform and opacity, ensuring the site feels "snappy" even on mobile devices.
- Logical Robustness: Closing every security and logic loophole, from API rate-limit handling to strict authentication guards.
- Zero-Friction UX: Reducing the path from "Search" to "Deal" to a matter of seconds.
🧠 What we learned
- Defensive Programming: We learned the importance of auditing every possible failure point—especially in API integrations—to ensure the user always sees a friendly error state rather than a crash.
- UX Psychology: We discovered that small details, like using tabular-nums for prices and a "Lowest Price" ribbon, significantly increase user trust and perceived value.
- Performance Budgeting: We learned how to balance heavy animations with page load speeds, ensuring that visual polish never comes at the cost of performance.
📈 What's next for PricePilot
- Price Tracking & Alerts: Implementing a "Watchlist" where users can receive notifications when a product's price drops below a certain threshold.
- Browser Extension: Developing a companion extension to provide "PricePilot" suggestions in real-time while the user is browsing other retail sites.
- AI-Powered Recommendations: Adding an intelligent "Deal Score" that considers price, shipping speed, and retailer trust to suggest the best value, not just the lowest price.
- Community Reviews: Allowing users to share their own shopping experiences and verified deal finds.
