Inspiration
Online prices fluctuate rapidly, causing buyers to miss flash deals, limited-time discounts, and price drops on essential items. Manually checking multiple product pages throughout the day is tedious and inefficient. We wanted to build a fully autonomous shopping companion that handles the entire pipeline—from watching prices round-the-clock to executing secure, instant checkouts via PayPal APIs without requiring user intervention.
What it does
Price-Watch & Auto-Buy Agent is an intelligent web assistant that continuously tracks product prices across e-commerce platforms.
- Automated Price Monitoring: Periodically checks product target URLs for price shifts.
- Smart Target Thresholds: Triggers alert & purchasing mechanisms as soon as the item price drops to or below the user-defined budget.
- Instant Auto-Checkout: Leverages PayPal Orders API to safely process payments and complete transactions instantly when a deal is hit.
How we built it
- Frontend / UI: React, HTML5, and Tailwind CSS for a sleek dashboard showing live tracking status and purchase history.
- Backend Service: Node.js / Express engine executing scheduled cron jobs for URL price fetching.
- Payment Integration: Integrated PayPal API v2 Orders & Capture endpoints to authorize and finalize real-time automated transactions.
- Database: MongoDB for managing user preferences, active watch items, and price history logs.
Challenges we ran into
- Automated Payment Authorization: Ensuring secure, pre-authorized checkouts via PayPal APIs while maintaining strict sandbox security standards.
- Scraping & Rate Limits: Handling dynamic DOM updates on e-commerce product pages efficiently without triggering web blockades.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Successfully executing end-to-end, hands-free purchases upon price drop triggers in our testing environment.
- Building a seamless, intuitive dashboard interface for users to set up watch trackers in under 30 seconds.
What we learned
- Deepened our understanding of web scraping, webhooks, asynchronous background tasks, and PayPal’s API authentication flow.
