Inspiration
Our project inspiration derives from our everyday life as make-ends-mean college students. Groceries, gas prices, rents, and education item costs have been sky-rocketing and we are trying our best to survive.
What it does
_Price Ain't Right _ seeks to find only the best, most reasonable, and in-your-budget deals from the big online retailers. We also have features like price-tracking notifiers and ecological purchases planned in future updates.
How we built it
As a team of two, each one of us takes on essential roles responsible for the final product. We built our front-end website with React.js, along with JS, CSS, HTML, coffee, tears, and a lot of red debugging screens. The backend wasn't fun either, as the majority of our time was spent on figuring out why Amazon is denying our API requests, and came to the disappointing conclusion that they had set measurements to prevent people from keeping track of their data.
Challenges we ran into
There were a lot of framework problems with React.js in the front-end as many of the libraries were recently updated, e.g react-router-dom, most notably, the adjustment in their parameter from Switch to Route and Route to Routes. Also, a lot of times the website goes blank, and then it doesn't. It's rather interesting tracking down these bugs. Additionally, centering divs after divs and formatting them was really time-consuming. For our backend, the API scrapers have hard limiting for most of the retail companies online which make our data-collecting process a huge pain since we mainly use Flask, Beautifulsoup libraries.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
The website works and we can pull data from the retail websites and correctly display them in the order we want.
What we learned
Frameworks are difficult to manage, Selenium is better than Beautifulsoup, we should've learned Angular, and centering multiple divs with backgrounds are really tedious and eye-damaging.
What's next for Price Ain't Right
We will be releasing more product-features in the next updates, some of which include education deal, and eco-friendly deals on various websites.
